What this work is about, in plain words

A continuation of the work on fucoxanthin on aluminium oxide particles with silicone. The composition was tested on mouse immune and intestinal cells, on human stem and endothelial cells, and when taken by mouth by mice.

Fucoxanthin is an orange pigment of brown seaweeds and diatoms. To make it easier to store and administer, the authors fixed it on porous aluminium oxide particles coated with polydimethylsiloxane. The aim of the article was to find out whether this composition is toxic to cells.

Fucoxanthin was extracted with alcohol from the diatom Cylindrotheca closterium. Compositions were prepared on particles of three sizes and with different pigment content. In vitro, they were added to mouse spleen and thymus cells, small intestine cells, human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and the endothelial line EA.hy926. In addition, mice were given the composition once by mouth, and intestinal, spleen and thymus cells were examined a day later. Cell proliferation, nitric oxide production and cell death were assessed.

According to the authors, the composition did not cause noticeable cell death. It increased the viability of spleen and thymus cells and enhanced the proliferation of endothelial cells and nitric oxide production by stem cells and intestinal cells. At the same time, the proliferation of human stem cells decreased in the presence of the compositions.

The work provides the first data on the safety of a carrier for fucoxanthin in cells.

Limitations. Most of the experiments were in vitro; the mouse experiment used 3 animals per group and one day of observation. This is not proof of safety for humans. The results were obtained by the authors of the article and do not describe Laboratory 17 materials.
